Witness for the Prosecution

Dear Driver of the Black Ford F250 Georgia License AKC XXXX:

Hey, Big Dick, 'cause I'm sure your mad driving skillz and extra large truck have nothing to do with your penis size......holy fucking shit. You are insane.

I followed you all the way up I75 northbound tonight on the way home from work. I watched you jump lanes out of frustration. Clearly you had somewhere to be. Fast. Each time you gunned your engine, your big black truck with the silver running board belched a cloud of thick, black smoke.

Since you seemed so ill-tempered, I gave you wide berth and kept two car lengths behind you in the left lane. I was comfortable with our speed. Fast enough to get me home as I sweltered in my hot, humid car, but not so fast that I would get a ticket.

When you finally gunned your engine and jerked your large truck over into the far right lane to go whizzing past the two construction trucks in the middle lane, I saw what was causing our apparent frustration.

A small blue car was now in front of me, driving fast, but not as fast as we all usually go in the left "fast" lane. I kept back, maintaining the two car lengths, as is my habit.

What happened next, happened so fast that it took my breath away. Later, after I got off the phone with the police, it made me break down. I was already teetering on the emotional edge today and your violent actions pushed me over. Thanks, you bastard.

I'm not even sure you're aware of what you did. But I hope, with my help, the police have now tracked your violent, angry, possibly homicidal ass down and arrested you. Because you are a fucking lunatic who should never be allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle again.

When you finished passing on the right, you jumped back into the middle lane. But that was not enough for you. No. You saw your nemesis on the left, driving the little blue car. That driver, realizing that he/she had offended your hair-trigger driving sensibilities made an unwise decision at that moment. That driver sped up. This did not suit you and you showed your displeasure by pulling your very large truck into the little car's lane.

What happened next was like a scene from a movie. I'm sorry that I didn't have my video camera running at that moment. How many days lately have I been taping as I drive (dangerous in its own way, I know) with the camera propped on my steering wheel? But this afternoon, I left the camera in its bag. For that I am sorry because the video evidence of the following moments would, without a doubt, put your sorry ass away for a while.

You jerked your wheel and pulled into the car's lane. The car slowed, but not enough. You jerked again and the car tried to avoid you by steering a little off the road. You jerked again, possibly making contact with the car - and this is where it gets horrific - the driver steered into the median, then over-corrected, sending his car into a turn and a skid, spinning across the three northbound lanes, crashing through some construction barrels, flipping into the ditch, bouncing into the air, flipping a second time and landing on its roof in the pine trees that line the interstate.

I don't know if the driver or any passengers survived. I was still in the left lane, gasping, I suspect and braking, I hope. The semi next to me hit his brakes and made a loud noise. An SUV ahead of us in the right lane made to pull over onto the shoulder to go help the driver of the blue car. I made the decision to speed up and catch up to you while dialing 9-1-1 to relay what had happened and to give the dispatcher your motherfucking license plate number.

It was a nice touch how you changed lanes, as if to blend in, slowed a little, changed lanes again and then got off at exit 277 (Acworth). After possibly committing vehicular homicide, I'm guessing you may want to go home and wipe, but who knows.

Let me say again, that I hope they catch your fucking ass. And I hope you pay for what you did. I'm lucky that car didn't slam into me. I'm lucky that semi didn't nail the car and push it into me. I'm lucky that I had the sense to leave you plenty of room to be the asshole that you are.

Sadly, the driver of the little blue care was not so lucky.

I just hope whoever it was, they're still alive.

Holy fuck.

Any chance there were traffic cameras that caught it or were you already too far north?

Yah, yah yah yah yah!
that's a rough thing to come through. Be gentle with yourself and get lots of hugs and soft touches.

Scary and I'm here for you.

DCup said...

Bubs - Thanks. I hope the person/people in the blue car are okay.

Nan - Yeah, it was way up by lake Alatoona. I doubt there are any cameras up there, but I'm not sure.

Dora - Thanks. After the initial freak out, I'm okay now.

EBM - Me, too. Oh, me too.

MathMan - Thanks for telling me to breathe when I called you.

Mary Ellen said...

Wow---I certainly hope they catch the guy. I also hope you left your name and number with the police because they would need a written statement from you as a witness. If they don't call you back, I would just assume that they won't bother going after the guy.

I'll say a little prayer for the driver and passengers in the blue car.

Glad you're ok, kiddo.

Pissed in NYC said...

Good for you, DCup. I hope the driver in the blue car is okay, but if he or she is hurt (hope not worse) then they will need some help for bills. I hope they catch this bastard. Hit and run...worse than just hitting. Could be a felony.

Bob said...

I hope that the cops that arrive to arrest that asshole have been having a very bad day and that said asshole mouths off.

Good for you, DC, for calling in the info.

Pagan Sphinx said...

Those types of incidents really stay with you, don't they? Not only is it frightening to among a driver like that but it also causes one to feel so alone, without recourse and to worry about the state of humanity, in general.

I'm glad you did what you could and I hope some justice was done. I'm having this fantasy of the cops calling you as a witness very soon, and that asshole getting what he deserves for endangering the lives of others.

Yet another reason I'm taking public transit to work.

Breath some more, kiddo, breath.

Crap, I think my heart is racing just thinking about what you went through.

So glad you're ok.

jinky bean said...

I'm glad you reported it. I hope the cops find them, and arrest them.

Next week I testify in case involving someone who almost hit a family while driving intoxicated. Pretty scary.

G Rex said...

It sounds like there were a few witnesses.

Were you in fact able to give the dispatcher the entire license plate number?

Utah Savage said...

Thank god you're home and safe. I hope they catch that bastard. It takes much less than that to leave me shaking and feeling like I'm going to faint. I no longer drive on the freeway because of this--too many close calls, too much road rage.

If the guy doesn't go to prison for this somebody needs to murder his ass. Or at least write about murdering him. I'm honestly not nagging. Catharsis is good for the soul when justice fails.

Please let us know what happens--if you get a call from the police as a witness who called it in--what happened to the people in the blue car.

I hope you don't have a meltdown over all the trauma. So glad you're with your family.

susan said...

I was hoping too that you got his license number. Nasty business and I'm glad you're okay.

Dr. Monkey Von Monkerstein said...

Holy shit! I hope they ctahc that freak and put him under the prison. I'm glad you're still around.

Mountjoy said...

It's a sorry truth that these days you have to a) drive safely yourself and a) drive defensively to avoid morons like the cock-head you describe, lest they take you out too.

I'm no homophobe but I always keep an eye in the rear view mirrow on the freeway in the wet, lest I cop one up the arse from someone who doesn't understand how slippery it is. The road, that is, not my arse.

nonnie9999 said...

lisa,
i have been in accidents and have been witness to them, and both are traumatic. i am very proud of you for having the presence of mind to follow that asshole and get his license number. i hope the cops were able to arrest him, and, more than that, i hope the people in the blue car are okay.
hugs to you. you're a good person.

Latka said...

I hope the driver of the blue car did not suffer any serious injuries. As for the black Ford....was it worth it asshole? This is the reason I tell my wife that the car horn is for warning only, not to express your displeasure at the idiots out there driving. You never know when someone will use the car as a weapon.

I'm glad you're ok, Cup. I, like you, keep a safe distance behind the car in front of me. It probably saved you from being a part of this disaster. What irritates me are the assholes that come over in front of me in the "safe space" between me and the car in front.

DCup said...

M.E. - Thanks. They didn't ask for my name or phone number. I hope they took it seriously. Thanks for praying for the people in the blue car.

Bob - I hope that jerk gets his due.

Pagan - Funny you should say that about the state of humanity. When I was losing my shit to Mathman on the phone, I think I said "What is wrong with people?"

Ten - I so wish we had public transportation here. I'd take it and just read my way to work.

Magdelene - Thank you.

Jinky Bean - It is scary to see. I'm glad you're doing what you can to help.

g rex - I hope other people reported it. I did get the whole number.

Utah - Driving in all that traffic, with the large trucks and the high speeds can be very nerve wracking. I don't want to do it all my life, that's for sure.

And hhmmmm. Wonder who could hunt that bastard down and run him over?

Susan - I was able to get the whole number and report it. I really wish I'd had my video running.

Dr. MVM - If ever I get moiderized on the road by a lunatic, I have plans to blog from beyond the grave. Or wherever my ashes are scattered.

Mountjoy - Absolutely you have to practice defensive driving skills. I keep a careful watch for tailgaters, too. They're really bad here.

Nonnie - I was so lucky to be just a witness. I hope those people are okay too. So far I've been unable to find out any info.

Latka - I get irritated when people jump into my "safe space" too. And yeah, I use the horn very judiciously because people here in GA seem to take it personally if you honk at them. In Chicago, they weren't so sensitive.

Sue J said...

I know what that kind of driving is like -- I do it on I-95 for an hour each way. The most stressful part of it is constantly being on the lookout for maniacs like that guy. I'm sure since you have the license plate # and the make model of the car, he'll get caught.

This morning I had a moron get annoyed at me because I guess I went through the EZ Pass lane too slowly for him! So when we both got through -- him on my tail -- he whipped around jumped in front of me just as we got to the tunnel entrance. Saving him exactly no time at all, and causing other drivers to swerve to avoid him at a very congested point where we all merge together.

Sorry for the rant -- I guess you "triggered" me!

DCup said...

Sue J - Oy! What a douche that guy was! I'm glad you were able to vent here. Sorry that had to happen to you.

Dr. Know said...

Wow!
Yet, nothing I haven't experienced first hand several times over the years. I've seen guys with kids and the wife onboard pull similar stunts. Georgia drivers are as bad, if not worse, as those in S. Chicago. :-o

When I moved back to GA from FL, I commuted up I-75 from ATL to Cartersville to work -- there are some really stupid, inbred MoFos on the roads around Woodstock and Acworth. It got so bad I quit the job to escape the idiots on the road. And god forbid it rains. They have never read a driver's manual, have no concept of manners or physics, they behave rudely, if not dangerously, and I'd like to shove a cell phone up most of their dumb arses.

The truckers, most of which are actually quite responsible, absolutely hate this city, and most have gotten to where they will drive only at night lest they end up in a pile of wreckage with these types of morons.

BTW, I've been rear ended 4 times in the "north of 285" corridor over the years - every time the drivers hit me sitting still in traffic and they were doing 45-55 MPH. My sphincter clenches every time I stop at a light or on the freeway. I simply will not drive around here anymore, for any amount of money.

The I-20 inbound traffic to Midtown from the westside isn't much better. I've seen several felony hit and run accidents caused by abrupt lane changing idiots there as well.

God, I miss Naples.

Dr. Know said...

Oh, yea, DCup - if this bothers you, don't even drive in DC or Baltimore!

okjimm said...

I'm just glad you made it home.

I don't 'get' road rage. Or fucking freeway racing. I have a thirty minute commute....and hwy 41is relatively easy road at 6am...but it still freaks me out how so many people are in a hurry to get nowhere in particular, for no particular reason. Or at least for reasons that are much less important than they would like to believe.

Maybe it is symptomatic of the mind-set in America. In such a hurry to get somewhere and no idea of what it is we are going there for....that some people have developed a complete and total disregard for all others.

I would rather slow my day and wish my fellow travelers a good day and hope they get home safe.

I'm glad you got home safe. Fellow Traveler.

Holy crap- good presence of mind for getting the plates! You're the kind of witness I like.

Liberality said...

Oh.My.God!

I hope you did get his plate number and turned it in.

You did good chasing him down and not letting him get away with that shit.

Hope you are ok--that is very upsetting just reading it let alone watching and living it.

Glad you are safe, and I'm glad you did what you did. I saw an incident like this on an interstate here in Jersey about two years ago - clear road rage lunacy - and tried to get the plate of the guy who did it, but failed.

Please post the outcome if you hear they got the guy.

Gene said...

Glad you IDed that motherfucker, hope he rots in jail. Glad you're ok.

Madam Z said...

First, let me echo the other comments about being grateful you are okay. And, let me add my wishes for that fuckwad in the Black Ford to be caught and rot in jail. AND...I am pleased that you had the good judgment and courage to follow him and get his license number. I also am anxious to know if the poor occupant(s) of the blue car survived. What a nightmare that must have been for them.

But now, I have a teensy rebuke for you. Leaving "two car lengths behind" someone in the fast lane is not enough! I was taught that one should leave a car length for each 10 mph of speed. I would guess you were going 70 mph at the time of this travesty. Ergo, you should leave 7 car lengths between yourself and the dickhead in front of you. Of course, given the number of dickheads on the road today, I guess if you tried to adhere to that advice there would be seven cars wedged into the space you tried to leave empty. So, as my idol Gilda Radner would have said, "Never mind."

Stay safe, dear Dcup.

Nan said...

Nothing in the news, either on tv or in the AJC, about a fatality on 75 yesterday, so it's probable the person(s) in the blue car survived.

I have days when I look at all those cameras along the interstates here inside the perimeter and mutter about police states, but experiences like yours are enough to make me wish they extended farther out.

And they didn't have to ask for your name and phone number. 911 has caller ID.

BAC said...

DCup, I'm glad you are okay and that you called the police on that asshole. I also hope the people in the blue car are not hurt too badly. Please update us if you hear anything.

Holy mother!
I guess I can only echo what all the others have said.

I just wish everyone would calm down out there! geesh.

Also, I did get a little teeny giggle because I read the euphemism post first, so when reading through the comments I see you're going to "blog from the grave" if something happens on the road....well, you know.

DivaJood said...

I am so glad you had the presence of mind to call the license plate in to the police. I am so glad you are unharmed - physically - because the psychic damage is still there. I hope you find out what happened to the driver of the small blue car. Let's pray he/she is unharmed.

What possesses people to drive their vehicles like they are assault weapons? I hope the bastard is caught, and winds up in prison. Big time.

DCup said...

Dr. Know - Georgia didn't have a mandated driver's education program and it shows. Look out behind you!

okjimm - I can see you as a really mellow driver.

Ranger Bob - My brother is a cop. Maybe some of his cop-sense rubbed off on me.

Liberality - Got the number and called it in. I hope they go after him.

CDP - I'm still trying to find out about the blue car. Nothing yet.

Randal - Nah, you're neighbor is still a tool.

Morse - Me, too.

Karenzipdrive - Thanks! I'm glad you're hear via Fran. She rocks. I see you there and at DCaps and Dusty's and you crack me up!

Quakerdave - I'm glad you tried to get that driver's number. And welcome! I rolled you!

Gene - Thank you, man.

Madam Z - MathMan said the same thing to me last night. I'd love to leave more space, but the idiots would be constantly pushing me further back as they cut into it.

Nan - I have the same mixed feelings about the cameras. I'm still trying to find out if those folks were okay.

BAC - Thanks! And I'll update if I hear anything!

Notfainthearted - Thank you. Yeah, I wish people would relax behind the wheel. Driving like an asshole doesn't really get anyone there any faster.

And you know me - I'll be blogging beyond the grave because I'll have all the time on my hands. Cough, cough. Yeah - blogging.

Divajood - I'll keep you posted. I wish I knew what possessed people to drive/behave like that. Maybe we could give them a pill for it.

Romius T. said...

Glad to hear you are ok. I can't stand drivers like that, and clearly this man is a menace and criminal. But I drive like a grandman out there too because of assholes like this. You were correct to give a wide berth to such a driver. We do not take speeding and aggresive driving seriously enough. My guess is it is as dangerous if not more than drunks on the road. I hope that asshat goes to jail forever if he killed someone.

Suzer said...

I drive I-75 every day -- I know exactly what you are talking about.

My partner and I witnessed a pickup rollover one day on 285 -- guy overcorrected and flipped at least three times before coming to rest upside down. Lucky dude walked away from it all. About 6 cars stopped to help him, which restored a bit of my faith in humanity. We pulled over, too, and were amazed to see him get out, stand up and talk to us. Had there been a passenger, they would have been dead. Amazingly, the cage on the driver's side was protected, but the way the truck rolled the passenger side was completely flat.

Prayers goin' out for those folks in the blue car, and for the soul of the a-hole who caused it all.

Joeventures said...

Why hide half the guy's license plate number? If you had a video, it'd be right there on the video. Keep us up to date -- and be in pursuit. Don't think for a moment someone in the Cobb PD is going to follow-up on a single phone call.

DCup said...

Romius - Thanks, man. Drivers like that scare me enough to make me really back off.

suzer - That's horrible. What struck me was just how quickly the whole damn thing happened.

Joeventure - I wish I had the whole number. Since I was on the phone when I gave it, I didn't write it down and now it's gone. All I have are the letters. I still haven't been able to find out anything. Will the police take my calls about it now, I wonder?

Steve Emery said...

I posted a comment several days ago - but I don't see it, so I must have done it wrong somehow.

I was horrified that this happened. I keep rethinking this from the point of view of the person in the wreck. It has haunted me for days - I just can't believe the casual brutality and enormity of this. Whether there is enough to convict or not, the fact is that they have the plate - and they should be able to impound the truck as a weapon in a case, and get the whole thing in the paper so there are at least SOME consequences for the monster at the wheel of that vehicle. He should be locked up, but the fact that they didn't take your name sounds discouraging. I keep wanting to do Internet research to find out the results, but I wouldn't know where to start.

And I was horrified that you had to see this, and get the shock of almost being involved. You and Liberality seem to get more than your fair share of difficult or horrible situations. My life is thankfully quite boring in that way.

Joeventures said...

I would advise calling the Cobb Police headquarters or whichever precinct applies and let them know what you saw. Since you no longer have the full plate number, you can still reference the 911 call you made. They should still have a recording of that call on file.

Another option - Cobb PD has a traffic complaint form you can fill out online. Again, reference the call.

Either way, Cobb PD should certainly still care about what happened. And whoever was in the blue car would still care even more.

I hate that this incident happened, but I would hate even more to see the driver of the pickup truck get away with this.

Several weeks ago -- I should mention -- a neighbor of mine witnessed a delivery truck destroy the driver's side rear view mirror on my car and drive away. Had it not been for her following up with me, I would not have known who did it, and would have eaten the cost of repairs. What happened with my car pales in comparison with the danger the pickup truck driver put many people in. But still, as much appreciation as I felt for my neighbor following up with me, I'd be willing to bet whoever was driving the blue car would especially appreciate your following up with the Cobb PD.

DCup said...

Steve - Thank you for your words. I know that I've been haunted by it too. I was able to finally identify yesterday where the car went off the road. I slowed on my drive home and got into the right lane so as not to slow traffic behind me and literally gawked until I came to the place. I'm pretty sure I've found it. I don't know why it was important to me, but it was. The vision of that car resting in the trees upside down is pretty clear in my head and I think I just need to purge it.

I also keep thinking of the horror for the people in the car who spun across the road, flipped, went airborn and, with luck, were able to climb out of the car.

As for boring - I go years without drama. Then, when it rains, it pours, I guess.

Joeventures - Thanks for the ideas. I will be sure to follow up. This is bugging me too much not too. Last night I tried to fill out a Cobb County tip line form online, but it was funky and I don't think it took. I really appreciate the links!

And I'm sorry for what happened to your car. What a pain!
