On Trust and Power

I woke up this morning wanting to write a post about trust and power. More specifically, I wanted to write about the abuse of trust and power.

Right now our nation is at a crossroads. As we change from one Administration to another, we find ourselves re-examining the way we trust our leadership. We question the power we place in their hands and how they use that power. We leave behind an Administration that has asked us repeatedly to trust them to do the right thing, only to have them repeatedly abuse our trust and their power. From Iraq to the bail out of Wall Street, they have proved that they are undeserving of our trust and incapable of handling power responsibly. In each instance, Americans are left scratching their heads with one hand while holding the proverbial bag with the other.

And then we begin to question our judgment. How could we be so wrong, so many times? How can we fall for this time and again? What's wrong with us?

What does the future hold? Will the Obama Administration take us for the same kind of wild ride? Will they be inclined to make unilateral decisions that affect the world? Will they use propaganda to spread fear and distrust so that they can set themselves up as the great protector in order to amass more power?

What will they do with that power? Good? Bad? Enrich themselves and their friends? We've offered them the opportunity to make positive change and now all we can do is trust that they will do the right thing. Each of us has our own ideas about what the right thing is, but I think we all understand that the dynamic we've become accustomed to vis a vis our government is unhealthy and unworthy of the representative republic we are.

Still, it's hard to not want our trust to be rewarded with good things, with positive change, with peace. Here's hoping we won't be disappointed again.

We can hope things will improve, hell the bar has been set so low Obama can shuffle over it.

When St. Ronnie said government was the problem, he was warning us what would happen when his party came to power. We need to kick his followers to the curb and work to rebuild this country.

The Obama Administration has got to be 10 times better than the soon-to-be previous Bush Administration - I just hope Obama Leads on some issues and doesn't always take the moderate position when the option of taking the more liberal position is possible. The Clinton folks tended to do that - anything to get along. I hope he takes some hits in the next four years for being the Progressive we think he is. I like your sentence: "We've offered them the opportunity to make positive change and now all we can do is trust that they will do the right thing." Amen.

I personally am a bit dissapointed that the people he is picking are from old govt - even though they are from the democratic party previously in the house.

I'm cautiously optimistic but more emphasis is on the cautious right now than the optimistic.

I campaigned for him with a strong passion and purpose and I am still dissapointed.

Time will tell.

During the Clinton administration, I was fond of saying I'd rather have a government that disappointed me instead of one that disgusted me. Until Bush the Lesser, I had no idea how deep that disgust could be. Even with Nixon and Reagan, with whom I disagreed on most topics, I can in hindsight see some things that went well. (Less with Reagan than with Nixon.) Bush and Cheney have brought us disaster after disaster, and Obama and his team have the terrible task of cleaning up the stables.

Obama has already done several things I didn't like, including signing on to the FISA bill and buying in to the fearmongering on the bailout. Nobody's perfect. But I do believe he is trying to move things in the right direction, when I know from bitter experience Bush and Cheney were 100% committed to driving the country in the wrong direction on way too many issues.

One bailout I didn't agree with and only now they're saying "Hey so where's all that money we gave you?" because no one thought to put in any oversight. Now they're talking auto bailout. After Obama takes office.

I'm guardedly optimistic. I expect disappointment on some level, and fear the sadness that follows betrayal.

What a great post. I like what Matty Boy says.

I think that we will all be confronted with things that Obama and his administration do that will upset and/or disappoint us. I just wrote about this on Tengrain's blog in regard to Lieberman.

And as I said there - watch Obama and I mean that in a good way. It will not be business as usual, it will not be partisan and it will not always please us.

But I am going to bet that it will be better overall.

Well what couldn't be better than these last 8 shit years. I mean it will be better than what it might at first seem.

I have such contempt for commenters who are so obviously wingnuts leaving the stupid comments on liberal's site Anonymously. Always anonymous. Chickenshit is what it looks like. Hit and run is the style. Fuck off anonymous.

Oh sorry, for a moment I though I was at my place. Please forgive the rudeness and profanity. But ignorance and cowardice piss me off. I'll be back when I'm less ready for a knife fight.

We voted to trust the new incoming administration, it's the first step.

I agree with Mathman. My vote was a vote of trust, that some essential things will be restored in an Obama presidency. And I truly believe they will. I think we will not be ruled by fear, first off. That is huge. I think that President Obama will make his way in the world with some humility. That will be huge. Hell, I don't choke when I say "President Obama." That is huge.

I also expect to be disappointed. I have not been a passionate Obama supporter and I have pretty high standards for what I think should be. I expect to be "minding the gap" between what I believe should be and what the reality is. But we should mind that gap anyway.

I feel optimistic when Obama says that we will be called upon to do more than fucking go shopping for our country. (And send our children off to die in Iraq.)

So I am hopeful in those regards.

I expect half measures. Sadly, we need full measures. Will it better? Yes. Will it be all that we need? No. Proof? Lieberman is still Chair of the Homeland Security Committee and Obama seems to be drawing from Clinton's old team. I expect to be disappointed. Because it's easier, that's why.

the line "we begin to question our judgment" stood out to me

i think one of the problems is waaayyyy yo many Americans never question there judgment.

While I have a guarded optimism that Barry X may be able to turn the tide slightly back a bit it wont surprise me if the hate mongers of Rush Limball Sean Hannity etc will work just as hard to keep us at each others throats

sorry for such a depressed comment im actually in a pretty good mood tonight lol

Was I hallucinating? Did I really blow away an anonymous commenter with my blustering bullshit? Is it time to see my shrink?

Utah - You should recognize your awesome power by now! Yes, you blew that anon away. Thank you.

Having a sea urchin for a bicycle seat would be less painful than the last eight years.

Having said that, I also am "cautiously optimistic," and hope to Trust But Verify. (Have I missed any trite platitudes? Wait, I'm not finished!)

The first thing I said, sitting here alone as Obama's victory was confirmed, was, "Now comes the hard part."

Shouting down the money-waving Corporate Masters will be the hardest thing we've ever done, so eat your Wheaties, Kiddies!

I'm sick and tired of being worried all the time. Right now I feel very optimistic. I want to enjoy that feeling just as long as I can. Sure the Obama administration is going to do things I may not agree with every time, but at least I trust him to do what is best at the moment.

Trust no one.

Another cautiously optimistic here. I know Obama will inevitably do things that disappoint me, but at least with him I get the impression of fundamental decency. Can't say the same for the Repugs.
